Welcome to Rail Infrastructure Explained.
This started as an idea. I began sharing informative, genuine posts on LinkedIn for my own network, explaining rail engineering, infrastructure, and the realities of the job as I see them day to day as well as my personal wins and beliefs.
Over time, those posts reached more people than I ever expected. The conversations grew, the questions kept coming, and it became clear there was a real appetite for honest, plain-English explanations of how the railway actually works.
Rail Infrastructure Explained grew from that. It’s a place to bring those explanations together, without jargon, without hype, just real experience, shared openly.
The railway is complex, busy, and safety-critical, and most of the time, it’s only noticed when something goes wrong.
I have worked on the railway for 15 years, dealing with the infrastructure, defects, and decisions that keep trains running safely every day. This site is where I break down how rail infrastructure actually works, using real experience rather than jargon or theory.
I talk honestly about track, switches and crossings, defects, weather, incidents, and the judgement calls made and why we make them which matter hugely to safety and performance.
If you work on the railway, I want this to feel familiar and grounded in reality. If you don’t, I want it to finally make sense.
